New Features and a Question

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 9, 2009, 6:26 AM

Rebecca's Journal

The question I have is regarding the practice of signing photos.  I have started signing my photos as subtly as I can.  This is not out of a fear of theft, because I really don't think about that at all, but just because I would like to be identified with my photos.  I know that purists would say that your style should be your signature but I think that only a handful of photographers on DA are in that lofty position.

I am interested in your opinion and I might even go along with the majority. :)

I am pleased to present new, long overdue, friends features for your enjoyment.

Rebecca

Yes! Sign your photos! As ^kkart always says "They deserve to have your name on them!"

Thanks. That seems to be the general concensus.

I keep putting off adding a signature. Every time I try something it looks corny or ugly. Some signatures I've seen here actually add to the attractiveness of the piece, and so I keep searching. :|

I tend to sign with a simple sans-serif font, low size and opacity; I find that works best not to detract from the photo. ^^ I'm not super bothered about theft, though I like to discourage it, especially with my favourite shots, so sometimes I put the text in a place where it's tricky to clone out.

I'd recommend doing it to minimise annoyance down the track, but it's up to you really. :D

Great Feature once again Rebecca..
After I have finished the painting this morning I will get on and have a look at the albums..

About signing photo's I think it all depends on the artist if you think it is good then go for it especially if you think someone will steal it..

I hate watermarks and only one thing worse than that is these tiny photos not much bigger than thumbnails members upload to DA with watermarks :wow: that you can't see them properly anyway and most of the time they are not good photo's so why bother..

Put me down as a No.

I agree with what :iconcrowthius: above said about even a novice could remove a signature with P.S.

Yes I agree with that too but my reason for signing isn't related to theft so that doesn't matter. If someone wants to steal you can't do much about it and to date I've had no evidence whatsoever that anyone is interested in stealing anything of mine. On the other hand you just don't know where your photos may end up, especially now that DA allows you to transfer anyone's photos to your facebook, twitter etc. I am not really interested in having a watermark and I completely agree that the DA watermark is so off putting I have a policy that I stick to about 99% of the time not to fave them. I am getting off track... I guess I just want my photos to be recognized as mine wherever they may end up. I love to think of them as wallpaper on someone's computer...with my name on them. :)

I think that signing them on the frame looks so much better than the actual photo myself but then not everyone frames theirs..

Yes it is great if you can recognize your photo's on other sites, shame if you don't want them there though.

I don't see a problem with signatures on the photos, the same way the painters sign their art. As long as it does not interfere with the compositiion of the photo :)
