Well I've taken possession of my new camera.  I went with the Canon EOS Rebel xsi, aka the 450D.  My second lens the 55-250 is back-ordered and that is probably a good thing or I might be totally overwhelmed.

As excited as I am there is so much to learn and at my age that is no easy task, old dogs, new tricks and all that, but I'm going to give it a try and see what I can do with a real camera.:)

I really appreciate the deviants who go into detail about how they produce their wonderful images.  I hope to learn a lot from them and I'm looking forward to as much advice as anyone out there is willing to offer

Oh congrats. ^^ I'm hoping to get a Nikon D40 next year for myself. DSLRs open so many interesting options. XD Only problem is I won't have much excuse if my pictures are uninteresting at that point. :D

Yeah Nikon and Canon seem to be the main DSLR's on the market at the moment and seem to each have their own following. Canon has better light, or so my son who has a Nikon tells me, but my eye is not trained enough to notice any differences between the two. I'm sure there are also things about Nikon that are considered superior to Canon.

I have figured out the HDR thing and went to a beautiful waterfall last weekend to try it out. It worked really well however it was raining and between the rain and the spray from the falls (due to the lay of the land I had to stand fairly close to the falls) I ended up with water drops all over my lens and the pictures. I hope to get out again this weekend in the sun this time and see what I can come up with so stay tuned.

My son is a tattoo artist [link] and a photographer. [link] he does horror macabre stuff which I am not fond of but he is good.

Yeah I just decided on the D40 because it was cheap and highly recommended by just about everyone. XD Ooo HDR eh, that can be pretty cool. I look forward to it. ;)

Gyah!! Yes, your son's photography is very good for what it is I'm sure but yeah, I'm not exactly into that stuff either. :D

What does an DSLR cost over there? I know with the new models coming out the prices are falling on the older ones. I got my Canon and the extra lens for about L500. A year ago that package would have cost closer to L1000. (Sorry I don't have a pound symbol on my keyboard and DA doesn't exactly have a lot of symbol options.)

Sorry if I shocked you with my sons links. I guess I'm just used to it. On the upside he makes a very good living as a tattoo artist which is more that can be said for most artists. Of course most artists works aren't worth anything until they are dead. His art literally dies.

Well a Canon 450D like yours costs about £500 as you say (£451 from Amazon). The one I'm going for costs about £250 (with lens) though it's reputed to be as good as some more expensive cameras. I'll probably get a 55-200mm lens as well if I can so I have a good focal range (there's a pretty good cheap one complete with VR for about £129).

Haha not shocked exactly no. ^^ I've seen plenty of gorey stuff.

Sounds comparable. I know one photographer from Portugal was quoting prices that sounded at least twice as high as North America. I got my camera, the 18-55 lens and the 55-250 for 500 so it was a bit of a break.

Anyway it's exciting when you get it so I hope it happens for you soon. :D

Yeh, I feel almost guilty to have so much camera when there is a lot of great talent out there that has to make do with less. I will try hard to earn the right to have it.
